Gum disease is caused by a build-up of plaque on your teeth, if you do not remove this plaque by brushing and cleaning in between them regularly it can build up and irritate your gums.

The top ways to prevent Gum disease are to

  • Brush your teeth at least two times a day with a fluoride toothpaste
  • Spit after brushing do not rinse
  • If you use mouthwash, use it at a different time to brushing
  • Use interdental aids such as interdental brushes or floss
  • See the hygienist at least once a year

Signs of Gum disease to watch out for are

  • Your gums become red and swollen
  • Bleeding when brushing
  • Your teeth becoming loose or falling out
  • Gum recession
